Tiemoue Bakayoko was one of the most sought-after footballers in the world back in the summer of 2017. The French midfield enforcer was instrumental in AS Monaco’s 2016/17 title-winning season and was linked to all of the Premier League big boys. Manchester United were the favourites to get him, but Chelsea somehow managed to swoop in to pull off a deal worth around £40m. Bakayoko was supposed to be the ideal replacement for Nemanja Matic, but things pretty much went wrong from the start. Injuries and a severe struggle to adapt to Premier League life had fans calling for him to be sold in the summer. His performance in the 4-1 loss to Watford last season was labelled as one of the worst in the club’s history. However, the club didn’t want to abandon their £40m investment straight away, instead sending him out on loan to AC Milan. It was supposed to be the shot in the arm Bakayoko needed, but it really hasn’t gone to plan. The midfielder is yet to start a Serie A game, making just four substitute appearances, but he has played the full 90 minutes in Milan’s two Europa League games. Nevertheless, the Italian media are reporting that things are quickly taking a sad turn for Bakayoko. Corriere dello Sport suggest that the Frenchman’s loan deal could end as early as January and he only has six games left to save himself. They believe he has ‘defects in his game’ – an assessment that no footballer wants to hear. From Milan’s perspective, you can understand their lack of sympathy towards Bakayoko given their midfield options. Lucas Biglia, Franck Kessie and Giacomo Bonaventura are already established options under Gennaro Gattuso. And the club could move for Zenit’s highly-rated Argentine midfielder Leonardo Paredes in the January window. It’s not looking good for Bakayoko.
