A tumultuous day for Manchester United went on long into the night with a marathon penalty shootout win over AC Milan in Los Angeles. Will Anthony Martial be sorry he missed it? Probably not.The Frenchman was already back in Paris awaiting the birth of his baby boy and, in all likelihood, the end of his United career. He was expected to play here, and in the remaining games against Liverpool and Real Madrid. He will not be back in America.  It was left to Alexis Sanchez, who nearly missed this tour himself over visa issues, to carry the attacking threat on a muggy night at the StubHub Center. He scored United’s goal and was at the centre of their best moments in a game that ended with a sudden death shootout more entertaining than the match that preceded it. Joel Pereira made three saves but had his own attempt saved after Chris Smalling was told to let United’s second-choice goalkeeper go before him. The predominantly United following in a 21,742 crowd lapped it up.Up to that point, however, this was another empty occasion involving a United side lacking in star quality. Jose Mourinho needed Martial here, even though the 22-year-old was hardly in scintillating form against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes, and so did the organisers. When a promotional video for United’s tour played on the big screens before kick-off, all but one of the players featured were somewhere else. Now Martial has joined them after apparently deciding that being at the side of his pregnant partner Melanie Da Cruz was more important than traipsing around the United States on what has become a rather joyless tour.As a father of two himself, there is no question that Mourinho will sympathise with Martial’s situation to some extent. When the United manager first addressed the media here last week, he began by revealing that his daughter, Matilde, was graduating from fashion school.
